Meeting with Chinese Registry delegation

The meeting of Karelian Registry of unrelated donors of hematopoietic stem cells representative and Chinese Marrow Donor Program delegation, which was lead by Liu Jinghu, the Deputy Director,  took place on the 19th of august in Saint Petersburg. The main aim of this event, initiated by a Chinese team, was a closer cooperation in marrow donors search in the registries of these two countries. In particular, our foreign colleagues were interested in the possibility to search donors in our registry database for Chinese people, residing in Russia (Chinese expat community in Russian Federation has around 100 000 people). Liu Jinghu told us about their Chinese registry which has now almost 1 million donors. 2 300 of them became real donors, implemented donation,  85% of them – for Chinese patients, and 15% - for patients from another countries. As a result we agreed on cooperation for donors search in Chinese and Karelian registries databases. Karelian registry representative was invited to visit Chinese registry of bone marrow donors.

Development of international cooperation

Karelian Registry of unrelated donors of hematopoietic stem cells and The Anthony Nolan Trust, the biggest British bone marrow donors association, signed an International Donor Search Agreement to cooperate in donors searching and donor product provision for patients from Russia and the UK. According to this agreement, the possibility to find donors for patients from both countries will be arranged as consistent with current international and national standards. This signed agreement will definitely facilitate practical cooperation of both registries in the realization of their main mission - to find donors for all patients, who need this transplantation.

Donor's motivation

WMDA working group on quality control accomplished an international research and found out motivations why people become a bone marrow donor. From Russia - Karelian Registry of unrelated donors of hematopoietic stem cells took part in this research. Here you can take a look at the results of this research. (thanks to Agatha Rosenmayr,M.D., Chair of the Quality Assurance Working Group of the WMDA for permission to publication).
